Today's Panchang: tithi, nakshatra and Rahu Kaal for your place
The Panchang is the Hindu almanac of the day. Its five limbs (pancha anga) are the weekday (vara), the lunar day (tithi), the Moon's nakshatra, the yoga and the karana. Families and temples use it to choose the time for a beginning, a journey or a puja. Here it is calculated for the place you choose, from the real positions of the Sun and the Moon.
Calculating…
The five limbs
Tithi: the lunar day. elongation E = (Moon longitude - Sun longitude) mod 360°; tithi number = floor(E / 12°) + 1 (1-30). Tithis 1-15 are Shukla paksha (waxing), 16-30 Krishna paksha (waning). Elongation is the same tropical or sidereal (ayanamsa cancels). A civil day takes the tithi prevailing at local sunrise (udaya tithi). Because a tithi lasts about 19.6 to 26.7 hours, a tithi can span two sunrises (vriddhi, repeated) or none (kshaya, skipped). Festivals have their own rules (e.g. tithi at pradosh, midday or moonrise) and can therefore differ from the sunrise tithi.
Nakshatra: the lunar mansion the Moon stands in, one of 27 sections of 13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac. The 27 nakshatras.
Yoga: S = (sidereal Sun longitude + sidereal Moon longitude) mod 360°; yoga number = floor(S / 13°20') + 1 (1-27). Note: unlike the tithi, the yoga depends on the ayanamsa (it enters twice).
Karana: half a tithi. A karana is half a tithi (6° of Moon-Sun elongation): k = floor(E / 6°), 0-59.
Vara: the weekday, each ruled by a planet. The Vedic weekday (vara) runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, not from midnight. Each day is ruled by the planet it is named after.
Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal
Daytime from local sunrise to local sunset is divided into 8 equal parts (each = day length / 8, about 90 minutes at the equinox). Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal each occupy one part, fixed per weekday. They are conventions for choosing when to begin something, not times of danger: many people simply avoid starting new ventures in Rahu Kaal. Because they follow the real sunrise and sunset of your place, they move through the year and differ from city to city; fixed clock times printed for a whole country are only an approximation.
Sunrise and sunset: the upper edge of the Sun on the horizon, with the usual atmospheric refraction, as drikpanchang and civil almanacs count it.
