How tradition reads
- Harmonious: animals from the same triad, four years apart.
- Allied: the six secret friends, such as Rat and Ox.
- Opposed: animals facing each other across the circle, six years apart.
- Delicate: the six pairs that easily hurt each other, such as Rat and Goat.
- Two of the same animal are familiar; every other pair is open.
