The weekly Torah portion

The Five Books of Moses are read through in the synagogue once a year, in 54 portions, one on each Shabbat. The cycle begins after Simchat Torah with Bereshit, the beginning of the world, and ends with Vezot Haberakhah, the death of Moses.

Why some portions are read together

A Jewish year does not always have the same number of Shabbatot without a holiday. In common years up to seven pairs are therefore read together, such as Vayakhel and Pekudei or Tazria and Metzora; in leap years, with their thirteenth month, usually only Matot and Masei. When a holiday falls on Shabbat, a holiday reading replaces the portion. Because Israel keeps one festival day fewer, it sometimes reads the next portion already and runs a week ahead of the diaspora for a few weeks. Vezot Haberakhah is not read on a Shabbat but on Simchat Torah, followed at once by the beginning of the Torah.
