New moon in August 2029
Friday 10 August 2029, 01:55 UTC
The Sun and the Moon stand together in the zodiac sign of Leo. The Moon is invisible: it is in the daytime sky with the Sun and turns its dark side to us.
What tradition sees in the new moon
Today the first step counts, not the plan for it.
The sign of Leo
Leo falls in the high summer of the Northern Hemisphere, where the tradition was born, and the Sun is its star. The old reading gives it warmth, generosity and the wish to be seen. A Leo wants to create and show what it can do, and it carries others along with it. It is loyal as long as it is taken seriously, and hurt when it is overlooked. Its task, it is said, is to shine without taking the light from others.
When to look for the first crescent
The thin crescent of the waxing Moon appears one or two evenings after the new moon, low in the west shortly after sunset. Exactly when depends on where you are: the visibility of the new crescent.
