New moon in August 2030

Wednesday 28 August 2030, 23:07 UTC

The Sun and the Moon stand together in the zodiac sign of Virgo. The Moon is invisible: it is in the daytime sky with the Sun and turns its dark side to us.

What tradition sees in the new moon

Something is beginning today, and you can feel it. A good day to start something that needs time.

The sign of Virgo

Virgo falls at harvest time in the Northern Hemisphere, where the tradition was born, and it is given an eye for what is useful and what is not. It is thought of as precise, helpful and practical, someone who sorts, improves and rarely makes a fuss about it. Mercury, its ruler, shows itself here as the discerning mind. Its weakness is a tendency to self-criticism, its strength practical service: with Virgo, things get finished.

When to look for the first crescent

The thin crescent of the waxing Moon appears one or two evenings after the new moon, low in the west shortly after sunset. Exactly when depends on where you are: the visibility of the new crescent.
