New moon in January 2027
Thursday 7 January 2027, 20:24 UTC
The Sun and the Moon stand together in the zodiac sign of Capricorn. The Moon is invisible: it is in the daytime sky with the Sun and turns its dark side to us.
What tradition sees in the new moon
Something is beginning today, and you can feel it. A good day to start something that needs time.
The sign of Capricorn
Capricorn begins at the December solstice, in the darkest time of the northern year. Tradition gives it patience, a sense of duty and staying power: it climbs slowly, but it reaches the top. Saturn, its ruler, stands for structure, limits and responsibility. A Capricorn often seems more serious than it is and would rather show its feelings through deeds. Its task is to give support without becoming hard.
When to look for the first crescent
The thin crescent of the waxing Moon appears one or two evenings after the new moon, low in the west shortly after sunset. Exactly when depends on where you are: the visibility of the new crescent.
